Score 89/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Nov 2011

(from 13-year-old vines in Monforte; bottled in June of 2011 following 2+ years in wood and 1+ year in stainless steel; 14.5% alcohol): Saturated dark ruby. Bright, superripe aromas of black fruit liqueur and licorice pastille. Rich, ripe and smooth; in a softer style for barbera but given shape by harmonious acidity and framed on the finish by firm minerality. Tannins are soft.

The 2007 Barbera d'Alba Superiore Scudetto tastes like biting into the juiciest, ripest of black cherries. It is a fabulous wine with gorgeous, radiant fruit. The openness of the 2007 vintage is nicely buffered by a persistent vein of minerality. This is an excellent choice for readers who may have found the 2007 Barberas to be too big. A mid-weight finish laced with sweet herbs, spices and licorice rounds things out in style.

The 2007 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Scudetto tastes like biting into the juiciest, ripest of black cherries. It is a fabulous wine with gorgeous, radiant fruit. The openness of the 2007 vintage is nicely buffered by a persistent vein of minerality. This is an excellent choice for readers who may have found the 2007 Barberas in general to be too big. A mid-weight finish laced with sweet herbs, spices and licorice rounds things out in style. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017. This is a stellar showing from Mauro and Giuseppe Mascarello. The 2007 Baroli are stunning now that they are in bottle, but the Barberas are equally worthy of attention. As always, the style is very traditional, but in 2007 the steady warmth of the vintage has given the wines an extra dimension of fleshiness. The 2007 Monprivato in particular is shaping up to be another legendary Barolo from Mascarello. Importers: Doug Polaner, Polaner Selections, Mt. Kisco, NY; tel.
