I had hoped for more based on cask tastings, but tasted twice from bottle, the 2002 comes across as a relatively one-dimensional Pauillac with pleasant currant flavors intermixed with tobacco leaf, cedar, and spice. It is medium-bodied but short and lacking persistence as well as depth. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.
Very little nose. Fruit there, and relatively ripe, but a bit simple and brutal. Pinched finish. Acidity marked. (JR)
Extremely deep blackish crimson. Smells like the borderline between green/unripe and crisp/refreshing. There do seem to be the odd herbaceous notes here and on the palate it's definitely ungenerous, verging on hard. Very tough. (JR)
About the producer
This Fifth Growth Pauillac estate was purchased by the Castéja family – owners of Ch. Batailley – in 1919. In recent years they have been investing in the property, focused on driving quality forward.
