Score 89/100 · Drink 2021-2023, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2021

The 2005 de Viaud is fully mature, but it has aged well. Sweet dried cherry, espresso, worn-in leather and spicecake. Oak signatures are a bit strong and rob the wine of some freshness. Even so, the 2005 is nicely done. I would not push my luck on aging, though.

A blend of 67% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, De Viaud’s 2005 Lalande de Pomerol is a somewhat compact, medium-bodied, dark ruby-colored wine, but it is not terribly complex or compelling. It possesses solid fruit and ripe tannin in a nice, drinkable style, but it is straightforward and monolithic. Drink it over the next 3-5 years.

Fragrant cassis with edge of violets, a little too dense and chalky so the finish is rather tough. (JH)
