Quite evolved ruby. Mint and intensity on the nose. Dusty and quite tough. Made in old-fashioned bludgeon style! Hard work. [Lots of press wine?] (JR)

Cos d’Estournel’s second wine has ratcheted up its quality. The crisp 2004 Les Pagodes de Cos offers notes of crushed rocks, flowers, and red as well as black fruits in a medium-bodied, streamlined, feminine style. Drink it over the next decade.

[CS 46%, M 54%; 20% new oak] Very deep purple with blackish hint. Quite aromatic and forward on the nose – notable acidity. Definitely lean – this wine shows the vintage’s, or perhaps Merlot in the vintage’s, faults. Green notes and only a hint of generosity on the front palate which disappears pretty sharpish. Dry, inky finish. (JR)
