The 1982 Single Harvest Tawny is a selection from six pipes out of a stock of 47. It is pale in colour, nearly clear on the rim. The walnut, dried honey and smoke-scented bouquet is almost reminiscent of mature Sercial Madeira, and the aromatics are very airy. The elegant, understated palate is well balanced, displaying fine acidity and a slightly honeyed texture. Veins of ginger and dried honey define a finish that feels very approachable. Paul Symington suggested drinking this on its own, and I would agree. Tasted at the Symington Tawny Port tasting at the Tower of London.

Graham’s released the rare 1982 Single Harvest Tawny to commemorate the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Charles Symington selected only six pipes for this bottling. Paul thinks this is so delicate it should be drunk on its own rather than with cheese. Very pale. So lively and delicate! A real wine ! It has clearly been in barrel for ages but doesn’t exhibit that almost-painfully reduced, concentrated phenomenon encountered in long wood-aged sherry. A serious, complex wine, a sort of white burgundy of a port. (JR)

The 1982 Single Harvest Tawny has a fragrant bouquet with marmalade, toffee apple, leather and molasses. It is not the most intense nose that you will ever find on a tawny, but has an effortless feel. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant viscous entry, elegant and well-balanced with hints of marzipan and Chinese five-spice on the finish. Find. Drink now-2025.
