Quite stern with quite a bit of oak. Firm. Glossy. A bit too oak-dried on the finish. Very, very 2003 vintage-characterised (dried fruit character) on the finish. (JR)

The 2003 Aalto is a purple-colored wine offering a stylish nose of smoke, toast, graphite, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, ripe, but slightly compact and the finish is firm. It would appear that the 2003 vintage has removed some of the generosity normally found in this wine in top years. Nevertheless, it is a fine effort that should drink well through 2027. Ruby-red. Intense perfume of boysenberry, sexy oak spices, vanilla and candied flowers. The concentrated flavors of red and dark berries and vanilla are almost sweet but are nicely lifted by juicy acidity. Finishes lush, broad and long, with supple tannins. Those who are laying out $100+ for California cult cabs ought to give this wine a go.
