The 1978 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru remains an exceptional wine, the best vintage of this era alongside the 1985. The ineffable bouquet is as mercurial as ever with crushed stone, rose petals and wild heather, quite similar to Dr. Georges Mugneret's style. The palate displays exquisite balance, as fresh as a daisy with that lithe, sensual and persistent finish. Every atom of this wine wants to give pleasure. Tasted at a private dinner in London.

The 1978 Clos des Ruchottes is just a sensational grand cru that continues to fire on all cylinders. It has a transcendental bouquet, one of those that is nigh impossible to articulate in words. Mercurial in the glass, it offers fleeting orange blossom, minerals, wilted rose petals and wild heather with ineffable delineation. The palate is beautifully balanced with silky tannins and a sorbet-like freshness and vitality. Focused, lithe and somehow, “athletic” - this is everything you look for in mature Pinot Noir.
