Tasting notes
The 1994 Valsotillo Reserva (made from 100% Tinta del Pais that spent 24 months in oak) is powerful, evolved, and intoxicating in terms of its brash display of blackberry liqueur intermixed with licorice, mineral, and floral scents. This opaque purple-colored, full-bodied wine is brawny, expansive, rich, and brilliantly well-balanced. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2015. Sexy, smoky oak along with dark berries and game on the nose. Sweet and silky, but supported by strong acids and a firm tannic spine. Black cherry and dark berry flavors complicated by cedar and spice wood tones. Very long, sweet back end shows substantial but fine toothcoating ripe tannins.
