The 2005 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru is a little bretty on the nose and seems to have dispensed with more fruit than the Charmes-Chambertin tasted alongside. The palate is quite rounded, plush and spicy, again fully mature, and just needs a bit more grip and density towards the finish. Just a bit laboured by Rousseau's high standards.

Pale, medium cherry-red color. Perfumed red cherry, red licorice, mace, mint and menthol on the nose. Supple and lush but with a light touch to the flavors of spicy red fruits and dark cherry. Finishes with fine tannins and sound acids.

Rather suppressed on the nose. Strict. Relatively light and readable – not very concentrated. Marked acidity. Frank, fresh, correct – the opposite of flashy but quite tight. Not obviously Grand Cru quality at this stage, which is why I’m suggesting conservatively that you keep it quite a while. Am I missing something? Maybe this will take on flesh. Pure certainly but still a bit skinny. Good persistence though, which is why it might well be worth waiting. (JR)
