Dark red. Intensely floral and spicy on the nose, with pungent raspberry and cherry preserve fruitiness. Very sweet and supple, with vanillin oak accenting ripe red berry and roasted fennel flavors. Finishes sweet, slightly oaky and long, with intense raspberry confit character.

The 2002 Grenache Prodigal comes from dry farmed Grenache vines averaging 45-65 years of age. There are 1,000 cases of this splendid effort, which Kevin Mitchell told me was the “best I have made.” Sweet kirsch liqueur aromas intertwined with hints of raspberries, dusty loamy soil, licorice, and pepper jump from this rich, full-bodied, expansively flavored, pure, authentic Grenache. It possesses a beautiful mouthfeel as well as a long, heady finish. Drink it over the next decade. Importer: Peter Weygandt, Weygandt-Metzler, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800
