Colour very dark. First bottle very badly corked. Second: fresh and round on the nose – much livelier than the Louvées. Creamy, racy, good lift – this wine would do to illustrate to some other Cornas growers that there is a world outside Cornas perhaps. Even though it is far from typical of the appellation. (JR)

The 80-100-year old vines of Les Ruchets are planted high on the slopes of Cornas. The 1999 Cornas Les Ruchets reveals toasty new oak in the nose, raising the specter of an internationally styled Cornas. However, once past the oak, this dense purple-colored effort exhibits notes of minerals, pepper, blackberries, and cassis without the uncivilized, rustic tannin Cornas often possesses. This full-bodied 1999 reveals a multi-layered palate, considerable glycerin, outstanding fruit purity, and a long, impressive finish (20-25 seconds). Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015. NOTE: This wine is from the estate vineyards of Ann and Jean-Luc Colombo. Importer: Palm Bay International, Port Washington, NY; tel. (516) 802-4700.
