Tasting Notes
Complex, mature nose of savory notes, wet forest floor and wild blackberries, plus some delicate spice and bitter chocolate. Rich and full-bodied with excellent concentration and velvety tannins that very nicely support the bold palate. In spite of this, the long finish emphatically dry and very subtle. From a cool year with a long dry season. A cuvee of 57% cabernet sauvignon, 20% carmenere, 10% merlot, 8% petit verdot and 5% cabernet franc. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 20th Anniversary Berlin Tasting Event, February 2024.

The 2008 Seña came out of a very dry year that was also slightly cooler than average. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carménère, 10% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, it was aged for 22 months in new French barrels. Dark garnet red in color. The nose presents a balsamic profile with ripe fruit notes alongside subtle hints of pyrazine. On the palate it’s rich with a woody, slightly tannic structure that keeps proceedings compact and a little dry. A vintage that reflects the prevailing style in Chile at the time.
The 2008 Sena has a cool, reserved bouquet of blackberry, raspberry leaf, crushed stone and a touch of Margaux-like violets. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, crisp acidity and a symmetrical, rather stern, minerally finish, tobacco lingering on the aftertaste.

Drink now-2018. ||Sena is the peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings. I will not enter into a discussion about that here, although it must be said that Sena is an impressive wine. Tasting through this mini-vertical from almost the first vintage, I did find a distinct improvement from 2007 onwards. While I understand that older vintages have their share of plaudits, I discerned more complexity and vitality as well as finer integration of oak on newer vintages, as if more thought had gone into the wines. The result can be seen in the wines themselves, in particular the outstanding 2010. eRobertParker.com.December, 2012

About the producer

Seña – literally meaning “signal” – was Chile’s first icon wine. In the early 1990s, the country had a reputation mainly for lower-end, high-volume wines, but Eduardo Chadwick, owner and president of Viña Errázuriz, set out to change that.
