Score 86/100 · Drink 1998-2001, Robert Parker, Oct 1998

The deep garnet-colored 1993 Barolo Ornato is restrained aromatically. In the mouth, there is more sweetness of fruit, as well as the tell-tale tar, rose petal, and cherry notes of the Nebbiolo grape, intermixed with smoke and roasted herb nuances. Medium-bodied with dry tannin, this is an attractive effort for drinking over the next 2-3 years. A correct, but uninspiring effort, this wine is dry, austere, and tannic, yet complex and pleasant enough to merit a recommendation. Importer: Paterno Imports, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604-8900

Deep red. Black raspberry, currant, licorice, smoke, coffee and a hint of underbrush on the complex nose. Silky and thick with extract; a voluminous wine that offers lovely sweetness for the vintage. Complicating meaty and tarry nuances. Finishes with well buffered tannins and very good persistence. Approachable already.
