This was the best bottle that I've encountered of Leroy's 1999 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, unfurling in the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of dark berry fruit, cassis, smoked meats, rose petals, candied peel and sweet spices. Full-bodied, velvety and immensely concentrated, it's seamless and multidimensional, built around an elegantly muscular chassis of velvety tannin and a lively spine of acidity, concluding with a sapid and expansive finish.

The 1999 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is a sublime expression of the vintage. It has a breathtaking, ineffably complex bouquet of extraordinarily delineated crushed violet, blueberry and wild strawberry aromas that convey exuberance and zest for life. The medium-bodied palate offers tannins chiseled by the smallest tool in the box, and just the right amount of edginess. I adore the structure of Lalou’s wine here. A quite wondrous Romanée-Saint-Vivant that should be treasured. Tasted at the DRC/Leroy comparative dinner in Hong Kong.

Leroy's 1999 Romanée Saint-Vivant is remarkably powerful, with searing tannins that still need quite a bit of time to soften. Readers lucky enough to taste the 1999 should expect a wine that shows a decidedly virile, muscular expression of this grand cru, where the wines are often much more silky. The broad, ample finish speaks to power and gravitas.

Mid rusty ruby. Liquorice on the nose. Very lively and wild – untamed – but lighter than the 2010. Transparent with a dry finish and some fine tannins in evidence. (JR)
