Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet from Jean-Marc Boillot feels a little oaky on the nose at the moment, although there seems to be enough substance to absorb that with time. The palate is a little anonymous on the entry, balanced but compared to Jean-Marc's other 2012s, it has relatively less to say. Still, it does exhibit impressive crispness towards the finish.

Pale yellow. Fresh white peach and minerals on the nose. Silky and suave in the mouth, offering a lovely sugar/acid balance and a compelling roundness of texture. This is much easier to taste today than the Referts but is still quite youthful. The very long finish shows no rough edges but I'd still give this wine a few years in the cellar before pulling the cork.

Some liquorice and real intensity. Drier and less flashy than of old but it certainly delivers. (JR)

Parcel #1: Cloudy appearance. Stone fruits, hazelnut, spices and lees on the nose. Glyceral and sweet but not yet complex, showing mouthcoating, almost Meursault-like stone fruit intensity and good length. Parcel #2, from smaller grapes more affected by millerandage: Explosive, very ripe aromas of apple, mango and red grapefruit; smells sweet! Then highly concentrated and tactile on the palate, with the sweetness of fruit leavened by strong acidity. Very aromatic. Boillot will assemble these two parcels for a single bottling.
