Bright vivid fruit, enjoyably silky tannins, this is more cohesive and easier to enjoy than the 2009 Larrivet, still intense with smoked cedar oak, but with plenty of energy through the palate.

The 2010 Larrivet Haut-Brion has a very deep colour. It offers blackberry and black olives on the nose, hints of cassis and violet, a very engaging set of aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. This is a gutsy, concentrated, powerful Margaux that has great purity and a velvety finish. Plush and sensual, this punches well above my expectations despite not reaching the heights of its peers. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Larrivet Haut-Brion opens with scents of espresso, tar and licorice over a core of baked plums and blackcurrant cordial. Full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling notes of baked blackberries and fruitcake with rugged, chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing a little warm and rustic.

Tasted blind. Deep garnet. Minty, slightly herbaceous but intense mature fruit aromas – leather and dried fruits but not raisined. Lithe, supple and well balanced on the palate. Still a way to go for the tannins but it has the fruit to keep up. (JH)
