The 2001 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru shows moderate bricking on the rim. There is a very subtle reduction at play on the nose, quite savoury and irony in style, lovely definition though with fireside hearth scents surfacing with time. The palate is underpinned by a fine line of acidity, focused with pastille-like red fruit. There is some attenuation on the finish by dint of a more challenging season, though overall this Les Cras remains tensile and pleasurable. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.

Much darker colour than the 2002. Very direct and smooth. Actually tastes fully developed with lovely satin texture. Well done! Just a slightly metallic note on the finish stops it getting a higher score. Still pretty tannic on the finish. Round and really well made – full of integrity. Impressive. (JR)

Excellent bright ruby-red. Rich, ripe aromas of spicy blackberry, black cherry, smoke and game. Chewy and rich, conveying a strong impression of extract. Highly concentrated but a bit compact, and just this side of ponderous. Finishes with nicely buffered tannins. Roumier may have had a wine like this in mind when he admitted to me that he may have overextracted certain wines in 2001. "Perhaps I should have made them lighter," he said. "Only time will tell."
