From magnum, Roumier's 1999 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras is drinking well, offering up a rich bouquet of blackberries, cassis and spices, framed by a touch of oak, and lent a certain rusticity by some animal aromas (present in several of the domaine's 1999s). The palate is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and rich, with powdery tannins that still aren't entirely melted, ripe acids and a carnal/animal finish.

The 1999 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a beguiling bouquet with ripe red cherry, crushed strawberry and juniper scents, a touch of iron filings emerging with time in the glass. Fine mineralité and tension are on display here. The palate is very well balanced with fine-boned tannins, impressive depth and grip, a 1999 that harnesses the precocity of the season to its own advantage. This feels very persistent on the finish, a Les Cras that has a long life ahead of it. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.

Lovely complex nose with so many layers. Unlike the Dujacs there are no problems here with this 1999, even if we have passed into another stage of evolution from the 21st-century vintages. Bravo again! Satin smooth at first and then masses of fine tannins. Should last for a very long time. Quite firm really, especially underneath, but the ripeness of fruit on the front palate distracts from this. (JR)
