Score 95/100 · Drink 2014-2031, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2014

The 2001 Chianti Classico Vigna del Sorbo is in a beautiful place right now. Early signs of tertiary complexity are just beginning to show on the bouquet. A wine of pure power and depth, the 2001 is indelibly shaped by the naturally low yields of the vintage, a year in which a devastating spring frost took with a significant portion of the production. The 2011 is a powerful, full-bodied Sorbo with enough structure to drink well for many years.

Panzano. Dark ruby with orange-tinged rim. Nuttiness and tar, with air more sweetly perfumed. Elegance, sweetness and freshness. Lovely tannic bite and hints of sweet cherry. Very fresh finish, with lingering sweet fruit and tobacco leaf. (WS)

Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep crimson (and nose) suggest there is more than a dollop of Cabernet here. Muscular and still quite youthful.  Fine wine by any measure. Racy and sleek.  Great partner for roast marinated duck. Tannins just starting to resolve themselves.  Still a notably dry finish. Well made.   (JR)

Broad and zesty and spreads right across the palate. This is delightful but still needs lots of time. (JR)
