Score 95/100 · Drink 2025-2035, Jeb Dunnuck, Jun 2025

Coming from a parcel on the upper plateau, just above Pavie and Larcis Ducasse, the 2000 Château Pavie Decesse is now relatively mature, with a still rich, powerful style in its darker berry fruits, licorice, roasted herbs, and loamy earth. Based on 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, raised in new barrels (I believe 100%), it brings full-bodied richness, a deep, opulent mouthfeel, and velvety tannins. Its oak is completely resolved, and while I don't see much upside here, it should have another decade at a minimum of prime drinking. Drink 2025-2035.

Very ripe and powerful with spice, meat and walnut character. Full-bodied, deep and layered. Flamboyant and decadent. Long and flavorful finish.

Gerard Perse’s 2000 Pavie Decesse, a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc from a vineyard situated above Pavie, on the steep limestone hillsides outside the walled town of St.-Emilion, is a fabulous effort (all the Perse wines are stunning in this vintage). Notes of camphor, creme de cassis, violets, black currants, cedar, and licorice jump from the glass of this inky/purple-hued offering. Monumental richness, sensational sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate, and a 45+-second finish result in an extraordinary wine that is just reaching its plateau of full maturity. It should last for another 20-25 years.
