The 1997 Haut-Bailly is certainly one of the more respectable wines from a vintage that was maligned at the time. It has a light graphite-scented nose. Hints of bell pepper come through with time and touches of garrigues that I noticed on another bottle opened at the château many moons ago. The palate is quite structured, almost austere, a little light in the mouth but with freshness. It is an unpretentious Pessac-Léognan that should probably be drunk soon as there is now more dryness on the finish.
