Score 83/100 · Drink 2011-2017, Robert Parker, Feb 2011

The 2008 Hermitage includes the declassified fruit from Le Greal parcels. Licorice, tobacco leaf, autumnal vegetation, black cherry and red currant characteristics emerge from the spicy, mid-weight 2008. Drink it over the next 4-6 years. Sorrel’s holdings in Larnage in Crozes-Hermitage consist of equal parts Roussanne and Marsanne. In most vintages, Sorrel produces two cuvees of white Hermitage. The top white is Les Rocoules, which emerges from that well-know hillside site on the granite Hill of Hermitage. Importer: J. O. A. Imports, McLean, VA; www.jaowineimports.com

Deep red. Cherry, violet, smoke and a hint of game on the nose. Quite sweet, even rather feminine in style, offering textbook syrah flavors of dark berries, bitter cherry, violet and olive. But this is like an x-ray of syrah, with light body and brisk back-end cut. As fresh as it is, it lacks the stuffing one expects of Hermitage. Finishes with hints of smoke and bitter cherry. There will be no Hermitage Le Greal bottled this vintage.
