Much more expressive than the Antonin Rodet Charmes of the same vintage. There's pleasant rusticity here, plus correct if unthrilling red fruit. Proper persistence that will open with further age. (RH)

Medium red. Highly perfumed nose offers raspberry, rose petal and smoky minerality lifted by noble nuances of white pepper and blood orange. Sweet, smooth and intense, with lovely precision and inner-mouth floral character to the flavors of red fruits and minerals. An impeccably balanced and very sexy wine that finishes with substantial ripe, dusty tannins and lingering floral perfume.

("true Charmes," says Potel) Deep, bright red. Captivating aromas of red fruits and rose petal. Silky on entry, then tactile and chewy but weightless in the middle, with subtly complex flavors of red fruits, flowers and earth lifted by a peppery quality on the back end. Finishes very long and perfumed, with ripe, sweet tannins and noteworthy purity. A highly promising Charmes.

Nicolas Potel's négociant wine. 'No chaptalisation and no filtration therefore the most natural wines we've made for years. Some winemakers make a comparisons with 2003 – but there were more than 100 days between flowering and picking in 2007 and 2008. 2007 was less delicate than we thought; I was tempted to bottle in September but found the wines were not ready.' Scented and sweet. A real charmer. Very fine tannins. Fresh. Vibrant. (JR)
