The 2002 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was cracked open at the Vin et Vinyl evening, precisely at the moment I spun the full 15-minute version of Flowered Up's "Weekender" just for complete context. This has a graceful bouquet that delivers bright red cherry and blueberry fruit, pressed violet and a discreet underlying marine tincture. Fine delineation, though not as complex as the Ruchottes. The palate is very well balanced with filigree tannins. Not a powerful Charmes-Chambertin, though transparent and (again) very poised. This gently builds towards the finish that exerts satisfying grip, though overall this is probably à point. Delightful.

Sweet, grainy nose – very tightly packed on the palate. Not especially expressive – very tight and rather grainy. Two bottles tasted but not a great success. (JR)

Lovely aromas of red cherries are found in the nose of the light to medium-bodied 2002 Charmes-Chambertin. Silky-textured, suave, and pure, it reveals delightful raspberry and red cherry flavors in its seamless character. Anticipated maturity: now-2011. Palish medium red. Light, lively aromas of red fruits and rose petal. Spicy, lively and light, with bright raspberry and currant flavors and good inner-mouth energy. Finishes with supple, ripe tannins. There's nothing aggressive about this grand cru.
