Moderately saturated palish red color seemed to grow darker with aeration. Fresh perfume of red fruits, dried flowers, truffle, mushroom and underbrush. Not a large-scaled or expansive grand cru but fine-grained and ripe, showing insidious energy to its raspberry and truffley soil tones. Really lovely retention of red berry fruit here. Finishes with cherry and mineral notes and excellent lift. Eric Rousseau noted that the 2001s were closed for a long time, and I suspect that my score for this wine is higher than it was upon its release. Really wonderfully perfumed and alive.

Mid ruby with a very pale rim. Racy, rich, mulch-like nose and good lift. Again I get cherry fruit – not really a particularly serious flavour for a Grand Cru burgundy! But then Charmes is traditionally so much lighter than Chambertin. Pretty structured but there is good fresh fruit too. A certain sweetness on the finish. (JR)

(about two-thirds Mazoyeres and one-third Charmes) Medium red. Spicy red fruits, earth and a floral nuance on the nose. Sweeter than the foregoing samples, with red fruit and spice flavors and a supple texture. Not yet showing much nuance, though (Rousseau says it's too early to judge a wine like this). Finishes with nicely ripe tannins and good length.
