Score 92+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2007

Bright red-ruby. High-pitched aromas of black fruits, violet and licorice. Juicy and extremely primary, with intense black fruit and violet flavors demonstrating terrific vinosity. "My purest Charmes to this point because it wasn't fined or filtered," noted Emmanuel Humbert. Sappy, penetrating black fruit flavors are as fresh as a barrel sample and in need of five or six years of bottle aging. The Humberts' holding features 55-year-old vines on the north side of Mazoyeres.

(50-year-old vines at the north end of Mazoyeres) Ripe, musky aromas of wild small berries, smoked meat and flowers; the most complex wine of the range. Silky, dense and strong, with mineral and spice character giving this terrific aromatic character in the mouth. A step up in precision and complexity. Wonderfully velvety and voluminous without any impression of undue weight. Broad finish features suave tannins and excellent persistence.
