Score 93/100 · Drink 2005-2012, Pierre Rovani, Jun 2004

Geantet’s 2002 Charmes-Chambertin bursts from the glass with gorgeously sweet red cherry aromas. Bacon-laced red fruits and spices are interspersed with blackberries in its concentrated, lush character. Medium-bodied, generous, and harmonious, this wine possesses a long, fruity finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2012. Importer: Daniel Johnnes/Jeroboam Wines, New York, NY; tel. (212) 625-2505 and Kysela Pere et Fils, Fran Kysela, Winchester, VA; tel. (540) 722-9228

(a blend of 1952, 1963 and 1972 plantings) Ruby-red. Brooding, darker aromas of black raspberry, smoke and flowers. The fattest and sweetest wine in the cave but without any heaviness. Exudes an utterly captivating rose petal perfume and sappy fruit flavors that I associate with the best examples of this grand cru. (Geantet says heÂ’s in the best sector of Charmes, next to Griottes-Chambertin.) Finishes extremely long and subtle, with superb fruit and great mineral snap. (In comparison, the 2001 version was more virile, showing more Chambertin-like animal, smoke, iron and earth, while this seems to have fresher acids and a more obvious mineral character.)

This too is deftly wooded with flashy, expressive, exuberant, very fresh red fruit aromas introducing impressively textured, sweet, palate staining, perfectly balanced flavors that are deep and complex. This is classic Charmes in character and culminates in a dry, firm, structured finish. This too should drink well young or old.
