A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, the 2006 Tardieu-Laurent Côtes du Rhône Guy Louis sports a full, ripe bouquet of spiced dark fruits, licorice, meat, vanilla and asphalt. This cuvée sees a touch of new oak and while it’s noticeable, it wears it beautifully. In the mouth, the wine is medium to full bodied with a soft, round character, lush fruit and a lengthy finish. This needed an hour of air to really shine and was still going strong on the second day. I might be underrating it and this will drink well over the next 5 to 8 years.

70% Marsanne (50 yrs+), 15% Roussanne (30 yrs), 1% Grenache Blanc (80 yrs) Creamy lemon-pie nose, a little nutty. Dense, full and quite clearly oak-influenced – but the oak gives more to the texture and richness than to the flavour. Powerful but finishes with a clean citrus freshness and length and a slight alcoholic warmth. (JH)
(made from vines in Plan de Dieu, Cairanne and Rasteau) Inky purple. Powerful dark berry, cherry compote and cocoa aromas are strikingly deep, even brooding. Weighty blackcurrant and candied cherry flavors coat the palate, picking up licorice and sweet tobacco on the long, chewy finish.
The real sleeper is the 2006 Cotes du Rhone Guy Louis, a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. Most of this comes from the appellation of Rasteau with some Cairanne. Deep ruby/purple with a peppery nose of cassis and kirsch intermixed with spice box and meaty notes, the wine is rich, full-bodied, and gorgeously plump and opulent.
