The 2005 Cotes du Rhone Guy Louis, which is primarily Grenache, is full-bodied and a real sleeper selection among Cotes du Rhones. With a dense ruby/purple color, plenty of kirsch liqueur, raspberry, and spice, this wine is heady, medium to full-bodied, fleshy, and should drink well for a decade or more. Michel Tardieu, who has exceptional knowledge about some of the finest vineyards and grape sources in both the northern and southern Rhone, utilizes the consulting services of renowned oenologist Philippe Cambie. The southern cuvees in 2005 were all very strong. These wines are generally aged in small, new oak barrels but with the Grenache cuvees kept in less new oak. Certainly they can show some new oak early in their life, but experience has taught me that after 4-5 years they become well-integrated in the richer, riper years. Deep red. Powerful dark fruit aromas, with accents of musky underbrush and espresso. Brighter on the palate than the nose suggests, with the bright raspberry flavor nicely framed by fine-grained tannins. Finishes supple, sweet and persistent.

From ‘the north and south Rhône’ . Honeysuckle – very beguiling nose. Tangy blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc. Some green fruit flavours and tension. Well done! Racy and rich. Well made. Good structure thanks to oak ageing. But no obvious oak. An eloquent example of how far relatively basic white Rhône has come. (JR)
