The 1976 Lafite-Rothschild has for many years been the surprise of an otherwise tricky vintage. This bottle replicated the one I opened back in November 2006. Mature in colour with a wide brick time, the bouquet is open-knit with Montecristos, graphite and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced, ... with ample detail on the classically styled finish. (NM)

The year of the sirocco. A hot wind blew during the harvest. This caused a phenomenon of dehydration. Before that, we had been through the hottest summer in 27 years, and dry into the bargain! Harvest started on 15 September, with over-ripe grapes. A vintage that will last. The year that Eric arrived at Lafite apparently. Contains as much as 30% Merlot. It had been ages since I tasted a red bordeaux 1976; a Léoville Barton in 2015 was the most recent. Transparent garnet. Something very slightly mousey on the nose (I am very sensitive to mousiness). A sweet start and then a little dry and short of fruit. It still has some charm but lacked a bit of juice and freshness. The finish was very intriguing and nuanced, however. Definitely first-growth quality, but getting on a bit. (JR)
This is the wine of the vintage. I love the rosewater, currants and citrus character to this now. It's still full body yet so ethereal. It goes on and on in the finish turning creamy and citrusy.
