Magnum hastily substituted for what was meant to be a 2007 – no great sacrifice! According to Guillaume d'Angerville, 2009 was very much a good year for Volnay even though it wasn't especially cool. 'The grapes were so exuberant when they came into the winery, but the élevage tamed the wine,' according to him. Gloriously perfumed. Really fabulous. (JR)

Monopole. Lift, freshness and evolution. Racy and transparent. Many-layered. A lovely choice of the Trimbach family to punctuate a dinner of 11 wonderful dry Rieslings, 10 of them Clos Ste Hune, at l'Auberge de l'Ill to celebrate the centenary of that famous wine. (JR)
Still evolving but already concentrated and jewel-bright – almost like a liqueur version of Volnay but more savoury than that and more savoury than the other 2009s from this producer at this stage. Quite long. (JR)

Marquis d'Angerville is synonymous with the village of Volnay, having long made some of the village’s finest wines. Best known for its Premier Cru monopole vineyard, Clos des Ducs, this estate crafts fine-boned, elegant styles of Pinot Noir – wines that act as standard-bearers for the appellation.
