Unfurling from the glass with a complex bouquet of red berries, rose hips, smoked meats, dark chocolate and sweet spices, the 2000 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs is medium to full-bodied, supple and charming on the palate, with good depth at the core and melting but chalky structuring tannins. Mingling an abundance of sweet fruit with ample savory nuance, this is showing very well today.

Bright medium red. Aromas of strawberry and red cherry lifted by floral high tones along with a slightly weedy quality. Fresh and fruit-dominated in the mouth, showing good intensity and balance but modest flesh. Finishes savory and dry, with reasonably ripe tannins, decent spine and surprising length. This bottle was delicious and still in good form. (13.4% alcohol; September 16 harvest; 45 h/h; 3.5 pH)

Vintage originally described as diluted. Harvest 16 September, yield 45 hl/ha, pH 3.5. Sweet and liquorice. Very charming and accessible with good structure. Quite refined and aristocratic. Prancing, thoroughbred. Sweet fruit – crystallised flowers? A charmer. (JR)

Magnum. Hubert de Montille calls 2000 'the picnic vintage'. There was a big discrepancy in yields in Burgundy Brownish ruby. Sweet and soft and ready – jewel-bright fruit. Quite punchy at the moment (a magnum effect?) With very slightly rustic tannins – more so, and livelier, than many other 2000 red burgundies. (JR)
