Tasting notes
The splendid 1997 Cote Rotie Les Grandes Places reveals an impressively saturated opaque purple color. The nose offers up gorgeous quantities of super-ripe black raspberries, blackberries, toasty oak, smoke, and pain grille. Expansive and full-bodied, with fabulous concentration, outstanding purity, and low acidity, this is a hedonistic, lush, heady, decadently styled Cote Rotie to consume over the next 12-15+ years. Saturated ruby color. Higher-pitched, spicier nose, more fruity and minerally than animal. Notes of peat, mint and flowers. Tightly wound and spicy at the core, with sound acidity for the vintage. Rather clenched and oaky today, but shows very firm structure and terrific cut. Brisk, very firm, spicy/minty aftertaste. Quite unevolved for a '97.
