The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is a terrific choice for readers who want to enjoy a mature wine. Worn-in leather, game, tobacco, incense and dried black cherry are all signatures of a wine that is starting to show a good bit of tertiary nuance. The tannins remain rather coarse though, the remnants of a warm, generally dry year. Based on this tasting, I expect the 2007 will continue to age at a relatively fast pace. It’s not an especially elegant wine, but it has come together better than I originally envisaged.

90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, 5% Colorino. Medium ruby with just the beginning of orange on the rim. Savoury bacon and red and dark fruit. Beginning of tar. Very closed palate, with great acidity and coating tannins. Lots of breed. One for the cellar. (WS)

It shows very limited mid-palate sweetness and dry tannins that attenuate the finish. I tasted several bottles and they were all very disappointing for this usually outstanding, benchmark wine. The 2007 Il Poggio spent 18 months in neutral 500-liter French oak barrels.

I have been drinking the wines of Castello di Monsanto since about as long as I can remember, which is at least 20 years. This set of new releases is quite frankly perplexing.
