Tasting notes
The 1998 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is stunning. Soft, silky and exceptionally balanced, the 1998 is a wine of gorgeous harmony and class. Dark cherry, tobacco, cedar and earthy notes abound in this super-expressive, mid-weight edition of Il Poggio. Smoke, game, tobacco and iron linger on a virile, somber finish marked by tannins that feel a bit rustic. There’s more depth than finesse here. Even so, the 1998 has another decade of life to offer.

The 1998 Chianti Classico Il Poggio exhibits sweet black cherry liqueur notes intermixed with saddle leather and dried herbs. Medium-bodied, with good acidity, sweet tannin, and an austere personality, it will drink well for 7-10 years. Importer: Veuve Clicquot. New York, NY; tel. (212) 888-7575
