Score 91/100 · Drink 2003-2015, Robert Parker, Jun 2004

An experimental cuvee, the 2001 Girolate is proof of what can be achieved by a perfectionist owner. This amazing effort competes with the finest wines of Bordeaux. A huge, black/purple-colored claret, it boasts notes of melted chocolate, espresso roast, and black cherry liqueur, and a medium to full-bodied, velvety-textured, opulent style that must be tasted to be believed. The bottled wine is even more impressive than it was from cask.

Medium ruby-red. Very ripe, liqueur-like aromas of cherry and musky espresso. Dense, sweet and pure, with captivating brown spice flavors. Not especially deep but broad and creamy-sweet, with plenty of tannic support.

Bright dark ruby. Ripe, slightly inky aromas of black cherry and licorice. Supersweet, supple and quite primary; has a fruit juice character but offers compelling sweetness and a pliant, chewy texture. Does not come across as overworked. Finishes with ripe, even tannins and good length. A very impressive and intriguing sample that I look forward to following into bottle.
