Tasting notes
The 2006 Richard Lander Shiraz contains 5% Mourvedre. Purple-colored, it has a bouquet of balsam wood, black pepper, scorched earth, game, and blueberry compote. Intense on the palate with savory, meaty flavors, it has enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years and should drink well from 2011 to 2021. The Colonial Estate is the Australian project of Englishman and Bordeaux chateau owner Jonathan Maltus. His first vintage in Australia was 2002. The entry level wines are line-priced at $30 offering excellent bang for the buck. Importer: Single Vineyard Imports, www.maltus.com

Opaque ruby. Youthfully brooding nose reluctantly displays red and dark berries, licorice and Indian spices; a sexy floral quality gains strength with air and carries onto the palate. Sweet raspberry and blackcurrant flavors are framed by silky tannins and offer excellent palate coverage and energy. The floral note echoes on the long, spicy finish, which is nicely focused and clean.
