Score 93/100 · Drink 2005-2020, Daniel Thomases, Wine Advocate, Apr 2005

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Altero is powerful and intense in aroma and flavor, well endowed with liquorice and tar in addition to its plum fruit, sizeable and weighty on the palate and with a chewy texture and important intensity on the close. It will still be drinking well in 2020. Importer: Empson USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900

Saturated ruby. Explosive aromas of fraise des bois, coffee, smoke, truffle, woodsmoke and earth; reminded me of Clos de la Roche. Very dense, broad and supple, with Burgundian notes of underbrush, truffle and flowers. Finishes with big, broad, tongue-dusting tannins and superb length. This is denser and more muscular than this winery's "regular" bottling, but shows less early sweetness and a bit less finesse and complexity today.

Full and sumptuous and just, only just, on the right side of being Brunello di Montalcino rather than an anodyne vino da tavola. Quite oaky on the finish. Sappy. (JR)
