Tasting notes
Ruby with a thick, pale rim. Quite low-key nose with some autumnal notes, but a bit smudgy. Definite alcohol there. Slightly simpler than most. Surprisingly open. Very slightly rustic. Big and bloody. (JR)

The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Altero exhibits a saturated dark ruby/purple color in addition to a sweet nose of ripe black cherry fruit intermixed with leather, spice box, and weedy tobacco. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with noticeable new oak, it has the potential to merit 90 points, but at present it is a bit angular and austere. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2014.
