The 1998 TrotteVieille has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry, briary, crushed rose petals and a scent of cured meat that becomes more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine and quite bold tannin that frame a sweet core of fruit. What this Saint-Émilion does not have is the tension and precision of more recent vintages, yet there is commendable weight and presence and it has an almost rustic charm compared to modern vintages. Tasted at the château.

A wine of finesse and elegance, without the weight and power of some of the newer, more fashionable St.-Emilions, Trottevieille's 1998 exhibits a dark ruby color as well as aromas of sweet blackberry and cherry fruit with smoky oak and mineral notes in the background. Round and elegant, it is a wine of finesse rather than power. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

A little thin now, but some attractive, sweet tobacco, orange peel and milk chocolate aromas. Medium-bodied, with dusty tannins and a light finish. Slightly tart.¿'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Drink now. 3,000 cases made. – James Suckling , Wine Spectator 2009
