Score 91/100 · Drink 2013-2018, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2009

The 1998 Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc, tasted from magnum, is one of the more accessible wines of the vintage. It reveals a super-ripe, concentrated style with notable inner sweetness and perfume. The finish is long and silky although the 1998 doesn't have the sheer pedigree of top vintages here.

The 1998 Bric del Fiasc, from a vintage many have overlooked, is packed with heady notes of ripe dark fruit, licorice, mineral and sweet toasted oak flavors in a style that is utterly captivating. It is another full-bodied, powerful Bric del Fiasc. It too looks to be long-lived.

A dramatic, provocative effort is the 1998 Barolo Bric del Fiasc. It possesses awesome levels of concentration, considerable power, immense body, and a fabulously pure, concentrated style. With impressive quantities of black fruits, licorice, minerals, asphalt, earth, and truffles, this Barolo is notable for its purity, high extract levels, and seamlessness. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2016. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel.
