Score 88/100 · Drink 2015-2023, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2013

Antinori's 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is loaded with super-ripe dark cherries, plums, incense, hard candy, kirsch, tobacco and smoke. A rich, layered Brunello, the 2008 comes across as a bit forced in the cellar, with copious French oak and a level of sweetness that is distracting. Pian delle Vigne remains a bit of a work in progress within the Antinori portfolio.

Fully mature-looking ruby with broad orange rim. Dusty, sweet dried-fruit character livened up by acidity. Ends a little dry. Already looking quite mature. (WS)
