Score 97/100 · Drink 2017-2037, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Jul 2017

The 2001 Grand Cru Mambourg has a golden/bronze color and opens, from this bottle, with a matured fairly developed bouquet of dried apricots, corn, morels and crushed stones. Full-bodied, round and elegant, with high concentration and an elegant, persistent structure, this is a tight, very complex and intense, persistently salty and firmly structured, but nevertheless delicate, Mambourg that develops its complexity with air. The finish is very long and intense and marked by its mealy tannins, lingering salinity and the long and aromatic aftertaste that reveals a concentrated stone-fruit aroma of apricots. This wine gets more and more complex with hours on the air. Fascinating, though probably mainly for advanced-structure drinkers and chefs.

(from chalky soil) Pale golden-straw color. Liqueur-like aromas of smoked meat, lichee, ginger and earth; conveys a powerful impression of soil. Then huge and quite dry (just five grams of sugar), with a very light touch. Comes across as less obviously ripe than the Gruenspiel but denser, richer, more complex. Offers great energy and spice in the mouth. Very dry and uncompromising on the finish, but extremely long and perfumed, with late notes of exotic spices. Real connoisseur's wine. A blend of the four pinots: blanc, gris, noir and beurot.
