Good deep red-ruby. Fresh, perfumed nose offers cherry, coffee and menthol; the ripeness here is less marked by the vintage than the Rue de Vergy. Suave, supple and sweet, but with a sappy freshness to the primary red fruit and menthol flavors. An element of minerally acidity gives shape and cut to this extract-rich wine and carries the finish. Very young and built for a slow and positive evolution in bottle. This has turned out very well. An outstanding village wine.

The Lignier 2005 Morey-St.-Denis Vieilles Vignes (from three parcels near the Route Nationale) leads with smoky, resinous aromatics. Ripe black cherry and raspberry characteristics then emerge and take center stage on the palate, where there are abundant fine tannins and real depth and substance as well as invigorating juiciness. This wine clings to the palate with resin, smoke and spices. Virgile Lignier elected not to filter his 2005s, but I suspected that a couple of them were suffering slightly from their very recent bottling. Also recommended: 2005 Bourgogne ($25.00; 86), 2005 Chambolle-Musigny ($50.00;86+?), 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin ($53.00; 86+?). Various Importers. Good ruby-red. Reduced nose initially dominated by chocolate, gunflint, licorice and spices, with black cherry emerging with aeration. Then juicy and tight, less broad than the Rue de Vergy but with more inner-mouth lift and definition. Unevolved on the back end too, but the building tannins are broad and ripe. Lignier combines three parcels of vines that are 47, 50 and 60 years of age.
