Tasting notes
A demanding year during which a hot May accelerated the growing season and summer saw some heavy rain. Healthy mid crimson. Really quite claret-like on the nose with some sweetness and smoothness – almost as though there were some Cabernet in with the Sangiovese. Attractive wine that is perhaps just a tad sweet until a hint of acidity on the finish. Good current drinking. (JR)

Vittorio Fiore virtually created the profession of consulting winemaker in Tuscany after arriving in 1975, but this is his own property, purchased in 1992 and high above Greve in Chianti. After a 1999 which frankly could have been better (a fact that Fiore himself is quick to admit), the 2000 Il Carbonaione gets things back on track with its deep ruby/garnet color, its warm aromas of roasted fruit given much complexity by the mint and eucalyptus notes, its mouthfilling but soft and elegant flavors. Evidently the owner has found the right oenologist for the job. Drink: 2005-2016. Importer: Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620
