Score 92/100 · Drink 2013, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2009

Roberto Voerzio's 1998 Barolo Cerequio is one of the more forward of the wines, which is not surprising considering given the location of the vineyard. The wine reveals notes of white truffles and mushrooms that complement the dark fruit. There is impressive concentration here, yet the wine is clearly approaching its tertiary stage. I consider 1998 part of a transitionary period for Voerzio that begins around 1994 and ends around 1998. The explosion of quality at this small estate starts with the 1999s, after which Voerzio has been on a roll.

Score 90-91/100 · Drink 2006-2020, Robert Parker, Oct 2001

The dark ruby/purple-colored 1998 Barolo Cerequio is structured and backward. It emerges from a south-facing vineyard from which Angelo Gaja produces his Conteisa. This tannic, structured, rigidly-styled Barolo is loaded with black cherry fruit, rose petal, and tar notes. It will emerge from its tannic cloak in 4-5 years, and will evolve for two decades. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020. A Leonardo Locascio Selection, Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620.
