Cassis puree, with gourmet edges of smoked caramel, blacberry and spiced plum. This is tight at the moment, needs a good few hours in a carafe to really show itself, and will improve further over next few years. 40% new oak, 42hl/h yield, harvest October 3 to 17. Remi di Constanzo technical director.

Tasted blind. A second bottle was called for but I thought it worse than the first – with a strange damp-hemp note on the nose and a lack of freshness, but real concentration and tannin on the palate. Drying finish. (JR)

63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot . Green bean, cassis, cedar and dark chocolate. Rather bitter palate that bites back a little too firmly. Medicinal notes on the finish. (RH)

Tasted blind. Char on the nose and very dry. Hugely demanding. ‘Correct’ with some cassis, but one of those wines that is difficult to recommend when there are so many fruitier, more pleasurable wines to choose from. (JR)

Gloria

The modest Ch. Gloria was only created in the 1940s, when Henri Martin – a cooper – purchased some vines. With parcels dotted in amongst the region’s Classed Growths, it produces impressive wines. Today it's managed by Vanessa and Jean Triaud (Henri Martin’s granddaughter and grandson-in-law).
