Score 87+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2004

Pale gold color. Peach and citrus hints on the nose, with strong oak notes of smoke and vanilla. Chewy with extract but a bit youthfully aggressive; showing less obvious fruit and sweetness today than the Raymond Roure Crozes bottling, or is it simply a bit overwhelmed by its wood element? With aeration, this showed notes of licorice and Thai basil and the dried nut character of classic traditionally styled white Hermitage.

Year in and year out, Jaboulet’s top white is the Hermitage Chevalier de Sterimberg, which is aged in new oak for nine months prior to bottling. The 2001 (a blend of 35% Roussanne and 65% Marsanne) exhibits aromas of ripe apples, honeysuckle, and flowers in a full-bodied, dense, chewy style with terrific texture, a rare unctuosity, good acidity as well as a long, concentrated, finish. Like most of these white Hermitages, it will drink well young, then close down, and re-emerge 10-12 years later. It will last for decades. Importer: Frederick Wildman, New York, NY; tel.
