Enjoyable aromatics on the nose, a lovely moment to open and drink this wine, full of generosity and plump fruit. Baked earth, liqourice, rosemary, cut dried herbs that are fairly strong, as is the turmeric spice and fig fruit, really this has a pretty exotic feel overall and is full of life. 36hl/h yield, 3.67ph, 50% new oak. Harvest October 8 to 15, so extremely late.

The 2012 La Dominique has a powerful bouquet that compromises some of its potential delineation. It feels a little monotone compared to the 2011, although there is ample blackberry and strawberry fruit mixed with leather and espresso. The palate is sweet on the entry, quite candied in style with fleshy red berry fruit tinged with marmalade and spice, although it does not quite have the cohesion on the finish as the previous vintage. Granted, it is much better than it showed in barrel, I still think the 2011 has the upper hand. Tasted at the vertical tasting at La Dominique.

Tasted blind. Very dark, glowing crimson. Heady and glowing. Rich and round. Very dramatic and insistent. Lots of drama but just a little green and drying on the end. (JR)

Above all else, the 2012 La Dominique speaks to precision. Beautifully expressive in the glass, the 2012 offers a compelling mélange of plum, lavender, mint, licorice and purplish fruits. Sweet floral and spiced notes add yet another dimension on the deep, pure finish. There is so much to like here. The 2012 is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Michel Rolland and Jean-Philippe Fort consult.
