Despite the warm and dry conditions, the 2020 vintage produced classical Chablis – and Jadot winemaker Frédéric Barnier is justifiably pleased with the results.
His Grand Cru Les Clos and Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre were the stars at our tasting. Both have all the hallmarks of top-drawer Chablis, and are available exclusively via FINE+RARE in the UK.
The wines capture the extraordinary energy and mineral freshness Chablis offers only in the best vintages.
Montée de Tonnerre is consistently one of the top performing Premiers Crus in Chablis, situated alongside the Grands Crus on Chablis’s warmer Right Bank. Jadot’s Chablis Montée de Tonnerre in 2020 is a great success, a beautifully well-made wine with exceptional balance. The nose is cool, pure, mineral and fresh with classic Chablis scents, and a discreet touch of oak. The palate is round, energetic and offers wonderful tension. A mixture of acidity and bitterness on the mid-palate combines with elegant flavours of white fruit, creating a silky mouth-feel. The finish is ripe but elegant, refined, long and savoury. This is top-drawer Premier Cru Chablis.

Jadot’s Chablis Les Clos is once again striking for its contrasting generosity and minerality. The 2020 is a classic vintage for the site, clearly translated in this wine’s crystallised fruit and forceful profile. The nose has saline, iodine notes boosted by citrus and lime flavours – it is detailed and has a classic, assertive, mineral, reductive character adding to the complexity. The acidity brings a multi-layered dimension to the palate, it is big, rich and round with an excellent crescendo finish, while retaining beautiful freshness. This Grand Cru will benefit from five to six years’ cellaring to reveal its full potential.
